Plus, it gives you no indication whatsoever of target speed, just direction.

But when the target is moving slowly, the mod has trouble deciding if it's stopped or moving, and frequently flickers back and forth. target is behind an island, but spotted by someone else. It helps a little bit if the target is exactly bow/stern on, and also helps a little bit with targets that I don't have direct LOS to, i.e. I also use it, and the above exactly describes my experience with it. If you can see the smoke then that is actually much better than the mod. The mod is really most useful for bow on ships when you can’t see the smoke. The smoke is actually far more sensitive than the mod, and if I can see the smoke clearly I prefer to use that over the mod, as the mod has a bit of lag in it on direction changes. At slow speeds you’ll see it flicker as the mod is trying to figure out what the ship is doing.

Green is ahead, yellow is stopped, and red is reverse. Also useful for ships at very slow speeds, though it’s unreliable there. Mostly for bow or stern on ships when it’s hard to tell what they’re doing.
